Your voices

May 26, 2009

Thanks once again to the thousands of you who have visited the site, many leaving intelligent, thoughtful, supportive comments. But time is dwindling. If the DA fails to file an appeal by end of day today, May 26, the defendant will likely be tried as a juvenile.

Our efforts have been about giving the victim a voice. Your voices have made the crescendo louder. The DeIuliis family says thank you.

  1. I am OUTRAGED!!! What is happening in this country! You want a 17 year old to be tried as an adult so that he can possibly go to prison for attempted murder and then someday be released into society as an even more dysfunctional adult who will surely then be more dysfunctional than he obviously is now. This child needs help!!! The juvenile system is where he belongs-where he can serve time for his actions but at the same time receive the psychological services he so obviously is in need of. He tried to committ suicide by throwing himself into a trolley after the attack!!!! While I sympathize with the Deluliis family I believe they are being revengeful and unforgiving. I have had a family member of mine actually murdered-he was stabbed to death and left to die in a pool of blood so I can understand what they are going through. However, it sickens me when we are sending children to full security prisons. Something needs to be done about this. Where is the love and compassion that God would want the Deluliss family to have for this mentally ill child? Mr. Zapalla I applaud your decision and courage to try this 17 year old child as he should be. Don’t let this PR firm “bully” you!

    • They have been trying to “help” this person since the first grade, as was testifed to at the hearings. His violent prior bad acts have escalated and escalated until he is now charged with attepted homicide and aggravated assault.

How about offering him something that would help him from accumulating more victims on his rap sheet?
We are trying to “help” him. Help him to be put in a place where he can no longer hurt himself or anyone else.
Plainly his time at home has not served him well.

      • nice site; however, IT’S HARD TO FIND WHERE TO COMMENT ON THIS SITE; is it possible to make a comment link larger, bolder? Bet a lot of people are logging on and not commenting b/c can’t find link to do that.

    • What could be a more compassionate response then to ask that this charged attempted murderer be put in a place where he will no longer hurt himself or anyone else?

If I were the parents, I do not know if I would be able to respond in such a sane fashion. This man could come after their daughter again?!

    • re: “Kim”
Look like he is ‘dysfunctional’ enough already. In prison at least he won’t be inflicting any more of his dysfunctional ways upon young innocents. He has been in therapy forever; there are times when therapy does not fix it. How about the rest of us just get a chance not to become his next victim.

    • I applaud that an open forum has been created for public comment and Mr. Zappala, your public is responding. IF this criminal does a violent act in the future, it is fair to attach the DA’s name to it and I’ll bet the PR firm will do it for free!

    • Answering first comment above: Not for anything, Kim, why aren’t you outraged that the young girl couldn’t walk home from school safely without getting attacked with a hammer? Who’s speaking up for the almost murdered girl?

    • Hello Kim….I mean, Hellllllo Kim,
Isn’t this young man dysfunctional enough? Getting a student to a secluded spot then hitting her over the head with a hammer…….Just in case you never had the educated definition of dysfunction, THAT IS IT!
Do us all a favor, Kim, send him an invite to your neighborhood and spare the rest of us. When persons chose to engage in adult activities, such as deciding life or death issues of another person, then they are choosing to be tried as adults in adult courts. Bet if this guy lived next door to you, you’d be the first one on the court house steps with the biggest sign, “Try him as an ADULT!”

    • Our children are too violent today and quite possibly because our adults do not require them to pay the consequences. I do not think house arrest is an appropriate punishment for trying to murder someone in cold blood. And this someone is a child herself. I think it is time our society do show the teens that they cannot commit crimes without equal punishment. Maybe our prison system is not the best, but that is another issue. Where is our society’s concern with the victims.

      • Where, indeed, is our society’s concern for victims? At the very least, this young male ought to make reparations for all of the harm he wrought upon this young lady. She’ll, no doubt, have ongoing medical bills for some time. He ought to have to pay for them.

  2. Well lets see this kid as you call him, is 17 hardly a kid. He knew when he went to Sarah that he was planning this brutal attack. Its people like this that go on to do more serious crimes. You want this person to be free and commit more crime and perhaps kill someone. I sure hope you never have to be a victim of someone like him.

This so call child needs to be tried as an adult, and serve the sentence he deserves. If he is tried as a juvenile at 21 all of this will be forgiven and no record will show he committed this horrific crime. So I hope all of you who think he is a juvenile never have to endure what the family of this young women goes through everyday.

    • Just read an article on line where young man in late teens got off for a juvenile offense, then went on to shoot a man dead.
Past performance is the best indicator of future actions.
The Adult time for Adult crime, says it all.
      Elaine

  3. Totally agree, Nan. Show compassion for someone who tried to kill you? Yeah, I’m sure Kim would be very compassionate if it happened to her. Hypocrisy (and idiocy) at it’s finest.

    • District Attorney Zappala is supposed to address criminals like this and remove them from our society so that we will be safe. The victim can testify, the police man that was there and they have the weapon……..doesn’t look like we need a Perry Mason moment here…..DA has all he needs. Hope he gets the job done in this case….reelection time isn’t all that far off and campaign contributions are going to take a hit from all the Mt. Lebanon attorneys that usually contribute.

    • Blue55, what else do you have to comment?

  4. The guy who did this crime was not hatched. Where were his parents…no, not just on the day of the crime. This guy didn’t turn sour just in one day…this kind of violence and malice takes time to properly gel. This can’t be this guys first bad deed right out of the box. Didn’t his parents see this brewing? What’s his history? Has he been in trouble before? At school? In his town? There must have been signs of this at home. We are a society. There are places where guys like this can go before something like this happens…didn’t the parents see this coming?
    gigi

    • My friend was the person hit over the head with the glass Jones Soda bottle by the bad guy here. Did that family call to say they were sorry for what their kid did? No. Someone from their family called and threatened to sue the person that THEIR SON HIT OVER THE HEAD. No apology. They threatened to sue when it was their kid’s fault for hitting my friend with a bottle over his head.

  5. Hearings are open to the public and I went to this one. Wow, they should publish this young man’s history. Can’t remember it all, but his parents absolutely knew what they had there. When they finally had him locked up and committed him a few times, it was probably because he had threatened to burn down the house at night while they were sleeping. They protected themselves, how about the rest of us?

  6. response to “Kim”
You are applauding District Attorney Zappala.
His side lost, meaning we the people, lost. ??
    So why the applause?

  7. Mother and Father of Mr. A-Hammer-makes-a-nice-gift-for-the-one-you-love,
Surely, there were signs…Signs of being suicidal? Signs of being homicidal? How many times did you turn a blind eye? I read that he tried to tamper with the light rail transit. How many would he have hurt then?

  8. The victim, Sarah, ought to be remembered and considered regarding the violent crime committed against her. This young lady has physical as well as emotional issues that she will have to learn to deal with as a result of this violent attack from someone she cared for. Laws along with those who are trained in law are supposed to deal in facts. Perhaps the attorneys are in need of a refresher course. It’s the crime and not the personalities that are supposed to be tried.

    • Well said.

  9. The situation that the family is facing where the young man who attacked their daughter may soon be free to roam the streets with proximity to the victim is something that cannot be countenanced in a civil society. Exactly what will it take for someone to do the right thing and put this dangerous criminal out of reach of the public?
